I have the worst luck when it comes to picking out books for Outside Reading. Not only do I pick pretty boring books, I also procrastinate to read them only a few days before they need to be finished and I don't realize they are terrible till it's too late. Then I have to read 400 more pages of treachery. The worst is when the book is so confusing it gives me a headache such as the one I just read, "The God of Small Things". The book wasn't extremely hard to understand nor was this book super long, but there were 100 characters to follow. On top of all the characters, there was a lot of political and cultural references that were specific to India a few decades ago, that I of all people have no clue what they meant or what was going on. By the end of the book I was like, "Sooo... why did that just happen?" which is kind of a frustrating and in this case a scary feeling to have considering I thought I was going to have to write an essay the following morning on the book. Even though I was super, SUPER grateful for having the MWDS as an alternative assignment to the essay, I still found it rather difficult with the book I chose. It took every brain cell of mine to just understand the story and follow the plot in which case I had no room left to be thinking about themes and symbols from the book. I really had to think hard and long to really fill out the MWDS honestly which took a little bit more time and effort then allotted in an hour and a half class period. I didn't even end up finishing: epic fail :( After this past book, I really want a book that I can understand, follow, be able to think deeper into, and just overall enjoy. I feel like because I've been so disappointed with the past few book choices I've made, I haven't wanted to jump into any books for fun, on my own because I can't handle attempting to read another book with the chance that it might be terrible too. So, if any of you have really enjoyed the outside reading book you've read in the past, please let me know for this upcoming book choice! I really need a good one :)

On a happier note, this is the book I read for reading extravaganza. It is by far the best book I have ever read. Finding a book like this makes reading all the boring ones worth while. |
I didn't come close to finishing my MWDS either! My book, A Clockwork Orange was also confusing and I shouldn't have procrastinated to read it so I wouldn't have been rushed.
