Ernest, I see ya boi.

So, after reading a few people's blogs about "Hills Like White Elephants" and talking to people in class, most people A) Didn't like the way the story was set up B) Didn't catch the the fact that the characters were talking about abortion and that turned them off from the story or C) It was just boring. But I would probably have say this has been my favorite story. I didn't think the way Hemingway wrote was boring at all. I thought it was... refreshing. I haven't read many stories or books written with so little description of what the characters are thinking and had mostly dialogue instead. I think when I was done reading the story, I had this gut feeling that what Hemingway did was a rare talent and his ability to do that was something I had an appreciation for even though it was a new concept to me. After we went over in class all of Hemingway's use of symbolism, allusions, and other literary devices, it just made the story all the more "cool" in my eyes. I'm sure another reason I enjoyed this story was because I actually knew that Hemingway was referring to an abortion during my first read through. Most of the time when the author writes all skilled-like and they throw in something the reader would have to be paying attention to get or to catch, I'm the reader that the concept just goes over my head so I liked that I caught on to what Hemingway was putting out there! At this point in my experience with Hemingway (which is reading this short story and that's it) I think his writing is awesome. I would have to say this story inspired to me to pick up a Hemingway book after I finish my outside reading, and I hope that Hemingway turns out to be the bro I think he is.
Ernest Hemingway is The Man.

  1. Hemingway like to write following what he called the Iceberg Principle: only a little visible on the surface, but there's a ton going underneath. This seems to either fascinates or infuriates readers.

  2. I agree that Hemingway's talent is like no other. This story made me question our view on what is right dealing with abortion. Also how much of an influence the guy in this story has over the woman, ven though their relationship seemed to lack commitment. I think the way the man wanted to preserve his old lifestyle by making the woman have an abortion was wrong and selfish. I agree, this story was not boring in any way, shape, or form!
